Project Summary

THE SITE
The proposed project site is located on the 1400 block of Post Street, between Octavia and Gough Streets - oriented immediately west of the Cathedral Hill Plaza Apartments (1333 Gough Street) and northwest of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption.

DESIGN
The ADCO Group has enlisted the architectural expertise of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, LLP - an international leader in architectural design - to produce an innovative design for what will serve as a notable addition to the San Francisco skyline.

Despite its soaring vertical architecture, the Cathedral's presence on San Francisco's skyline has been subsumed over the years by adjacent blocky buildings. 1481 Post Street is a slender, vertical building with a soft elliptical shape. Its geometric simplicity, slenderness and elegant form will honor the powerful geometry of Pier Luigi Nervi's nearby Cathedral.

1481 Post Street's main axis has been set to align with the Cathedral, clearly acknowledging the Cathedral as the neighborhood's dominant landmark and separating 1481 Post Street from the more bulky, slab-like neighboring towers that form an imposing urban wall along Geary Boulevard. Taken together - the new tower's shape, luminosity, slenderness and orientation - 1481 Post Street will be a graceful structure, working in concert with the Cathedral to mark the neighborhood on San Francisco's skyline.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS
1481 Post Street will not only provide new homeownership opportunities close to jobs, recreation and public transportation, but will also serve as a cultural centerpiece of Cathedral Hill. ADCO is committed to developing a building that will serve as a resource both to its residents and the greater San Francisco community.

1481 Post Street includes a mixed-use plaza of approximately 6,000 square feet of commercial space and over 5,000 square feet for a community education center. The center will be programmed, staffed, and operated by a non-profit organization. Though programming details of the education center are not finalized, a wide range of educational services and programs are intended for this space. Such programs may include a lecture series, language instruction, youth and senior services, tutoring, career seminars, and other services of benefit to the community. The plaza will also include a full-service spa, available to both building residents and the general public.

To improve the neighborhood streetscape, 1481 Post Street will also include a landscaped plaza along the south side of Post Street which will provide additional open space and rejuvenate pedestrian pathways. As 1481 Post Street will be located on the eastern edge of San Francisco's Japantown district, the plaza will be influenced by Japanese design principles in an effort to honor the historic cultural hub nearby.

In an effort to enhance the pedestrian experience along Post Street and Geary Boulevard, and in keeping with best-practice design principles, the existing above grade parking at the 1333 Gough Street site and new parking for 1481 Post Street will be accommodated below grade. The plans also include secure bike storage and car sharing spaces.
